One trick about finding an alternate is getting something thatís in a different weather pattern than your destination. Allen AAF gets different weather than Fairbanks, but Nenanna often sees the same weather as Fairbanks. Unfortunately, there arenít any other options.

We all know the alternate you file isnít the one you must use if your primary airport closes, but can you use an airport for an alternate if you know you canít land there?

Several months back reader Jim Gibertoni in Alaska forwarded me a letter he wrote to the FAA administrator, Randy Babbit. Hereís a line from that letter: ďMy question is simple: How does one FAA Part 91 pilot in Fairbanks, Alaska, get the attention of the FAA before the next crash happens in Fairbanks?Ē
